Alnmouth Beach

Alnmouth Beach lies at the mouth of the River Aln on the Northumberland coast, where open golden sand meets the estuary, dunes and the distant outline of Coquet Island offshore. The beach faces east across the North Sea with the pretty village of Alnmouth sitting above on the headland, its pastel-coloured houses visible from the sand. At low tide the beach expands dramatically, connecting with the estuary flats to create a vast area of sand, shallow water and tidal channels. The dune system backing the beach adds height and shelter, and the overall feel is spacious, clean and uncrowded — classic Northumberland coast.

Dogs are welcome off-lead year-round on this dog friendly beach, making it one of the most reliable coastal options in the county. The varied terrain — open sand, dune hollows, estuary channels and rocky outcrops — provides exceptional interest for dogs who enjoy exploring rather than just running. The estuary section is particularly engaging, with shallow tidal water, wading birds and the rich mud-and-salt scent of the river mouth. The firm sand lower down the beach is ideal for energetic dogs wanting flat-out runs. The dunes offer sheltered spots out of the wind. Alnmouth village has good facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. Parking is available with easy beach access.
