Whitchurch Waterways Country Park

Whitchurch Waterways Country Park follows the Llangollen Canal and surrounding meres on an 8 km circuit through the flat pastoral landscape of north Shropshire, close to the Cheshire border. The route traces the towpath between mature hedgerows with narrowboats passing at walking pace, then loops through meadow and around the meres — Blake Mere and Brown Moss — where open water and reed-fringed edges break up the agricultural flatness. With just 44 metres of total climbing, this is entirely level walking on well-surfaced paths, and the canal towpath drains well even after heavy rain. The landscape is quiet, open and gently paced — a world away from Shropshire's hills.

This dog friendly walk offers moderate off-lead potential with low livestock risk, making the meadow and mere-side sections particularly good for dogs who enjoy steady exploration rather than dramatic terrain. The canal provides constant water interest — dogs can watch the boats and waterfowl — though direct water access is safer at the meres where the banks slope gently. The scent environment shifts between canal water, damp meadow grass and the peaty edges of the meres, with rich birdlife adding movement and interest throughout. The flat, accessible terrain suits dogs of every age and fitness level, making this an ideal recovery walk or gentler alternative when weather makes hill routes unappealing.
