Berrow Beach (Berrow Sands)

Berrow Beach runs between Burnham-on-Sea and Brean along one of Somerset's most expansive coastal stretches, with the extreme Bristol Channel tidal range creating a beach that transforms dramatically between high and low water. At low tide the sand stretches out for what feels like miles — a vast, flat landscape where the sea retreats to the horizon and the walking feels almost limitless. The dune system behind provides a wilder, more natural backdrop than the developed seafront at Burnham, and the wreck of the SS Nornen sits partially buried in the sand as a dramatic landmark. The scale is the defining feature — this is a beach measured in horizons rather than coves.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, making Berrow one of the most reliable and spacious options on the Somerset coast. The vast low-tide sand provides extraordinary off-lead running space on firm ground, and the dune system offers contrasting terrain with marram grass, rabbit scent and sheltered hollows. Tides move quickly on the Bristol Channel and the sea can feel deceptively distant, so checking tide times before setting out is essential — being caught by an incoming tide on these flat sands is a genuine risk. The wind can be bracing on exposed days, but the dunes provide shelter when needed. Parking is conveniently available with direct beach access.
