Compton Bay (Hanover Point, West Wight)
Isle of Wight
Compton Bay sits on the dramatic southwest coast of the Isle of Wight, one of the island's wildest and most spectacular beaches with long sands at low tide backed by crumbling multi-coloured cliffs of clay, sandstone and chalk. The beach faces southwest into the prevailing weather, which gives it huge skies, powerful surf and a properly dramatic coastal atmosphere. At low tide, dinosaur footprints are exposed in the rock platforms — genuine 130-million-year-old tracks visible in the clay ledges. The cliffs behind show dramatic geological layering, and the whole setting feels raw and elemental compared to the island's gentler east coast beaches.
Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, making Compton one of the most reliable and spectacular options on the Isle of Wight. The long sand at low tide provides outstanding running space, and the rock platforms offer exceptional investigation — dinosaur tracks, rock pools, seaweed and fossil-rich clay create a landscape of constant discovery. The beach is best visited at low to mid tide when the full sand is exposed; at high tide the beach narrows against the cliffs. The surf can be strong, so dogs entering the water need confidence. The clifftop car park has easy access via steps. The combination of year-round dog access, dramatic scenery and genuine geological wonder makes this one of the south coast's standout dog beaches.

Timing your visit around low to mid tide makes a real difference , the full stretch of sand is exposed then, but at high tide the beach narrows considerably against the cliffs. The surf here can be powerful, so if your dog likes to swim, bear in mind they'll need to be a confident water dog. Parking is in a National Trust pay-and-display car park (free for NT members), and there are no facilities at the beach itself, so come prepared.
