Herne Bay East Beach

Herne Bay East Beach extends beyond the town's Victorian promenade into a quieter, more natural stretch of shingle and sand that provides steady coastal walking away from the busier central sections. The upper beach is predominantly shingle, with a broader sandy area exposed at low tide that provides firmer, more comfortable walking closer to the waterline. Views look north across the Thames Estuary to the Essex coast and the Maunsell Sea Forts — abandoned WWII anti-aircraft towers — standing in the water offshore. The further east you walk, the more relaxed the atmosphere becomes.

Dogs are welcome year-round on this dog friendly beach, with the eastern stretches providing the most relaxed off-lead experience away from any seasonal restrictions near the town centre. The shingle carries varied scent from the tide line — seaweed, shells, driftwood and the distinctive Thames Estuary silty edge — while the exposed sand at low tide provides better running terrain. The broad beach at lower water gives generous space, and the flat, accessible character suits dogs of all ages. The promenade provides an alternative walking surface when the tide is high.
