Botany Bay
Kent
Botany Bay is one of Kent's most visually striking beaches, a sheltered cove at the foot of white chalk cliffs with dramatic chalk sea stacks standing in the sand like natural sculptures. At low tide the beach opens into a wide expanse of sand and rock pools, with the chalk formations creating a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. The bay faces northeast with the chalk headlands providing shelter from prevailing winds, and the water is calm and clear in settled conditions. The full drama of the bay is only visible at lower tide states — at high tide the beach narrows considerably and the stacks are partially submerged.
Dogs are restricted from certain beach areas from 1 May to 30 September — check local signage for exact zones. Outside the restricted months, this is an exceptional dog friendly beach for exploration. The rock pools at low tide are rich with marine life, and the chalk formations provide endlessly interesting scent and texture. The sand is firm and clean, good for running when the full bay is exposed. Dogs comfortable on mixed terrain — sand, rock, shallow pools — will find Botany Bay deeply engaging. Timing your visit around low tide is essential to get the full experience, as the beach is best when the full bay and stacks are revealed. Parking is available at the cliff top with steps down to the beach.
