Kenfig Sands
Bridgend
Kenfig Sands stretches along the Glamorgan coast backed by one of the largest dune systems in Wales — the Kenfig National Nature Reserve — giving the beach a wilder, more remote feel than the developed beaches nearby. Once on the sand, the coastline feels expansive and undeveloped, with little visible beyond dunes, sea and sky. At low tide the sand extends widely, and the dune system behind provides miles of additional walking through a landscape of marram grass, orchid-rich slacks and freshwater pools. The reserve is ecologically important, supporting fen orchids and a rich community of dune plants.
Dogs are welcome off-lead year-round on this dog friendly beach, and the combination of vast sand and extensive dune walking makes Kenfig one of the most varied coastal outings in South Wales. The beach provides excellent running space on firm sand, while the dunes offer completely different terrain — softer ground, sheltered hollows, rabbit scent and the aromatic notes of coastal vegetation. Some sections are affected by strong currents, so keeping dogs out of the water in those areas is wise. The transition between beach and dune creates constantly changing scent and ground texture. Parking is conveniently available at the reserve entrance. A beach that rewards extended exploration rather than a quick visit.

Yes, dogs are welcome off-lead at Kenfig Sands throughout the entire year, with no seasonal restrictions in place. This makes it a reliable option whatever time of year you're planning a visit.
The beach is backed by an extensive dune system offering softer terrain, sheltered hollows and plenty of interesting scents , so it's worth building in time to explore beyond the sand itself. Do be aware that some sections of the water are affected by strong currents, so it's best to keep dogs out of the sea in those areas. Facilities are limited at the beach itself, though there is a visitor centre at Kenfig Pool and a free car park at the reserve entrance.
