Kimmeridge Bay

Kimmeridge Bay is unlike any conventional beach — the shoreline is composed of dark limestone ledges, rocky platforms and shallow pools that extend into clear, sheltered water within a Marine Special Area of Conservation. The rock pools here are among the finest in the country, with crabs, anemones, seaweed forests and small fish visible in the shallows. The Wild Seas Centre by the slipway, run by Dorset Wildlife Trust, is worth visiting, and the Etches Collection fossil museum in the village is outstanding. Access is via a toll road through private land to a small car park at the bay. The dark Kimmeridge shale gives the landscape a moody, distinctive character.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, making Kimmeridge one of the most reliably accessible beaches in Dorset. The rocky ledges carry deep, briny scent from exposed seaweed and marine life, and dogs find endless things to investigate among the pools and crevices. The footing is uneven and can be slippery, so this suits dogs and owners comfortable with a slower, more exploratory pace rather than flat-out running. The water is clear and calm enough for paddling on settled days. Beach access narrows at higher tides, so visiting on a falling or low tide gives the best exploration. A beach that rewards patience and curiosity — most dogs absolutely love it.
