Camber Sands

Camber Sands is the vast, dune-backed beach that most people picture when they think of the Sussex coast at its most expansive — wide golden sand stretching to the horizon at low tide with rolling dunes behind that give the setting a properly wild, almost continental character. The beach faces south with long sightlines across the English Channel, and the dune system is one of the finest in southeast England. The sand is soft in the upper sections but firms up closer to the water, and the scale at low tide is genuinely impressive. The village of Camber sits behind the dunes with basic facilities.

Seasonal restrictions apply to parts of the main beach — check Rother PSPO signage for exact zones. The dune areas and outer sections tend to be more relaxed regarding dog access. Outside restrictions, this is a superb dog friendly beach with outstanding space for off-lead running on firm sand. The dunes provide a completely different landscape — soft sand, marram grass, sheltered hollows and rabbit scent — that contrasts with the open beach below. The exposed conditions mean soft sand in places can feel like a workout for both dog and walker, and the wind is a regular feature. Strong currents in the channel mean swimming requires care.
