Lepe Beach

Lepe Beach sits on the western Hampshire coast where open shingle shores meet the woodland and heath of the New Forest National Park, creating a coastal setting with genuine variety. The beach is predominantly shingle with sand and tidal flats revealed at low tide, and the views across the Solent take in the Isle of Wight with constant shipping traffic in the channel. The D-Day embarkation remains — concrete hard standings from which troops launched toward Normandy — add historical weight to the setting. Coastal paths link directly into New Forest walks, making it easy to combine beach time with woodland routes.

Dogs are welcome off-lead year-round on this dog friendly beach, and the combination of shore, forest and history makes Lepe one of the most rewarding coastal outings in Hampshire. The shingle and tidal flats provide varied terrain with rich scent from seaweed, shells and estuary-influenced water. The coastal paths extending into the New Forest offer completely different walking — sheltered woodland, heathland and grassland — within minutes of the beach. Strong current runs at the Lepe spit end, so keeping dogs away from that section is wise. The relaxed, outdoors-led atmosphere means no resort pressure. Parking is conveniently available at the Hampshire County Council car park. A beach that works beautifully as part of a longer, mixed-terrain day out.
