Llanddwyn Beach (via Newborough Forest)

Llanddwyn Beach extends from the southern end of Newborough Beach on Anglesey toward the rocky headland of Ynys Llanddwyn — a tidal island connected to the mainland except at the highest tides. The walk to reach the beach passes through Newborough Forest, a vast Corsican pine plantation, before emerging onto sand that stretches toward Snowdonia across the Menai Strait. The views are extraordinary — the full sweep of the Snowdon massif rising behind the water, with the Llyn Peninsula extending to the southwest. Ynys Llanddwyn itself holds the ruins of a church dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, and a row of restored pilots' cottages.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, and the journey to reach it — through forest and along sand — makes the arrival genuinely rewarding. The sand is wide and firm, providing excellent running space, and the rocky headland of Llanddwyn offers completely different exploration with rock pools, sheltered coves and tidal channels. The forest walk provides woodland scent and shelter, transitioning to open salt air as you emerge onto the beach. Llanddwyn Island becomes cut off at high tide, so checking times before crossing to the headland is essential. The water is calm and clear for paddling in settled conditions.
