Attenborough Nature Reserve Skylark Trail

Attenborough Nature Reserve was established in 1966 on reclaimed gravel pits along the River Trent and opened by Sir David Attenborough. The Skylark Trail is the longest marked route at 4.2 km, following the railway line towards Long Eaton before returning along the river through 220 hectares of flooded pits, reed beds, islands and wetland. The reserve feels surprisingly wild given its proximity to Nottingham, with breeding warblers in the reeds and bitterns booming in winter. The paths are flat, well surfaced and virtually without climbing, making this one of the most accessible nature walks in the East Midlands.

This is a dog friendly walk that requires discipline but rewards patience. Dogs must be kept on leads throughout to protect ground-nesting birds and the wildlife that makes the reserve special, but the sensory experience is rich nonetheless: the damp, reedy air carries waterfowl scent constantly, and the variety of water, woodland edge and open wetland keeps dogs alert and engaged. The Skylark Trail is quieter than the shorter Tufted Duck Route, making it a better choice for dogs that find busy paths stressful. The flat, firm surfaces suit dogs of all ages and abilities. Toilets, a cafe and a shop are available at the visitor centre near the main car park.
