Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre

Most Berkshire walks involve chalk, pine, or parkland. Thatcham Moors is none of those things. This BBOWT-managed wetland reserve beside the River Kennet is a low, flat landscape of open water, reedbed, scrub, and marsh that sits in complete contrast to the rest of the county's walking. The 5.5 km circuit from the Nature Discovery Centre follows boardwalks and gravel paths through the reserve, with the centre providing café and toilets at a single convenient starting point.

The smells here are genuinely specific to wetland — standing water, mud, reed, and the persistent low note of waterfowl — and dogs engage with that environment with a different kind of attention than they bring to woodland or grassland. Bearded tit, reed warbler, and Cetti's warbler inhabit the reedbeds, adding constant sound to the experience. Leads are required in the sensitive reserve areas to protect ground-nesting birds and wetland margins; some off-lead time is possible on the broader grassland sections. Waterproof footwear is advisable year-round even with the boardwalk in place.
