Irchester was once a working ironstone quarry; now it's 194 acres of mixed woodland growing over the old workings southeast of Wellingborough, and the quarry origins give it a texture that straightforward parkland rarely achieves. The 5 km circuit passes through oak, birch, and ash, takes in the Ironstone Railway Museum with its narrow-gauge engines, loops through meadows and the Wildlife Trust's Cally Banks reserve, and benefits from the undulating ground the quarrying left behind.
The earthy, slightly ferrous smell of old ironstone beneath the leaf litter is distinct and specific — dogs investigate it with real focus. Muntjac deer are present in the park, so close control on the more enclosed woodland paths is sensible. Dogs are welcome off-lead across most of the site. The Quarrymen's Rest café sits at the centre of the park and the Ironstone Railway Museum is free to visit alongside the walk — a useful bonus for families.
