South Downs Way: Devil’s Dyke to Fulking

West Sussex

Devil's Dyke is a vast V-shaped dry valley cut into the South Downs escarpment north of Brighton, and the 10.2 km circuit that heads west along the ridge to Edburton Hill before dropping through the village of Fulking and looping back is one of the best structured walks on the western South Downs. The ridge section delivers uninterrupted open walking with big views north across the Low Weald; the descent through Fulking passes the Shepherd and Dog pub, one of the most reliable dog-friendly stops on this stretch of the Downs.

The chalk turf on the ridge carries that specific dry-mineral-thyme smell of the South Downs at their best, and the wind exposure gives dogs an acoustic and sensory environment that's hard to replicate elsewhere. Cattle graze the valley bottom near Fulking and sheep are present on the ridge sections — leads required through those areas. The open hilltop sections allow more freedom for dogs with solid recall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, this is a great choice for a day out with your dog. The route is largely open access chalk downland, and the Shepherd and Dog pub in Fulking is one of the most reliably dog-friendly stops on this stretch of the South Downs , a well-earned reward at the end of the circuit.

Dogs with solid recall can enjoy more freedom on the open hilltop sections, where the wide-open ridge makes for fantastic off-lead walking. That said, leads are required through the areas where cattle graze near Fulking and wherever sheep are present on the ridge sections, so it's worth keeping that in mind as you move through the route.

The circuit is 10.2 km, so it's a decent outing , make sure your dog is up for the distance, particularly given the exposed ridge and the descent into Fulking. Livestock are present throughout (cattle in the valley bottom, sheep on the ridge), so you'll need a lead in those sections. Parking is straightforward at the National Trust car park at Devil's Dyke, BN1 8YJ, and there's a dog-friendly pub at Devil's Dyke itself if you need a stop at the start or end too.
