St Mawes Beach

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A pretty, sheltered town beach beside a Tudor castle, with year-round dog access and a town full of dog-welcoming waterfront cafes.

St Mawes Beach is the small, sheltered town beach of St Mawes, one of the most attractive and prosperous small towns on the Roseland Peninsula. The beach sits in the lee of St Mawes Castle, a well-preserved Henrician fortification, and faces across the Carrick Roads towards Falmouth. The sand is fine and the water exceptionally calm, protected by the confluence of the Fal and Percuil rivers. The town itself is compact, charming and oriented around its harbour and waterfront.

Dogs are welcome on St Mawes Beach year-round and the town has a notably relaxed attitude to dogs, with several cafes, pubs and the waterfront all welcoming to well-behaved dogs on leads. The calm, sheltered water is excellent for paddling, and the small scale of the beach suits a leg-stretch rather than a long walk. The Idle Rocks hotel terrace and several waterfront cafes serve dogs alongside their owners. For a longer outing, the South West Coast Path picks up from the castle and heads around the peninsula in either direction. The beach is at its best outside July and August when day-trippers arrive by ferry from Falmouth.
