Combe Martin Beach

Combe Martin Beach sits at the bottom of what is said to be the longest village street in England, a narrow valley that drops from Exmoor down to the sea through a settlement strung out along a single lane for nearly two miles. The beach itself is sand and rocky outcrops at the foot of dramatically high cliffs, and the water here is better suited to kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding than to conventional swimming. The South West Coast Path climbs steeply from the beach up Hangman Path to the clifftop, where the views back down over the village and the Bristol Channel are among the most striking on the North Devon coast. Kayak and paddleboard hire is available in the village, and there are pubs, cafes and shops within easy reach.

Dogs are not permitted on Combe Martin Beach from 1 May to 30 September. The restriction covers the main season and the beach is open to dogs in the quieter months, which suits the character of the place: Combe Martin and Exmoor in autumn and winter is a very different and rewarding experience from the summer peak. The Newberry Beach is accessible on foot a short way west along the coast path and provides a quieter alternative for those exploring the area outside the main season. The village approach road is very narrow and parking requires patience; arriving before mid-morning in summer is strongly recommended.
