Normans Bay

Normans Bay is a long, open stretch of sand and shingle on the East Sussex coast between Eastbourne and Bexhill, backed by a low seawall and a single-track railway line. The beach faces south across the Channel, and on clear days the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head are visible to the west. It has a genuinely undeveloped character: no amusements, no promenade cafes, and minimal infrastructure beyond the adjacent campsite and a single pub. The shingle upper beach gives way to sand at lower tide states, and the wooden groynes trap sediment in a series of bays that reward walkers willing to pick their way along the shore. The Pevensey Levels, a protected marshland SSSI, lie immediately to the north and add to the wild, remote feel of the place.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no seasonal restrictions at Normans Bay, making it one of the more reliably accessible beaches on this part of the Sussex coast. The mix of shingle, tideline wrack and exposed sand at low water gives dogs a richly varied walk, and the open exposure means good sea breezes most days. The beach is popular with anglers and windsurfers, and the lower sections can be breezy enough to warrant a windshield. No lifeguard is present. Visitors should be aware of fast-moving tides, particularly the current that runs from the south-west, and the possibility of sinking sand at the waterline in some sections. Parking is limited close to the beach.
