St Leonards Beach
East Sussex
St Leonards Beach runs along the seafront of St Leonards-on-Sea, the western continuation of Hastings along the East Sussex coast. The beach is shingle throughout, backed by a long promenade and a mostly residential seafront punctuated by cafes and independent businesses. The character here is noticeably quieter than Hastings to the east, with fewer day-trippers and a more local feel. The promenade at St Leonards is popular with cyclists, joggers and dog walkers, and the beach access steps are regular and well maintained. Views east to the Hastings cliffs and west along the open Channel are a constant backdrop. The beach shelves fairly steeply in places, and there is no sand exposed at any tide state.
Dogs have seasonal restrictions on parts of St Leonards Beach under the Hastings Borough Council PSPO, which applies between 1 April and 30 September. The restriction zones cover specific sections of the seafront, and dog-friendly areas remain accessible east of Warrior Square during the restricted season. For the winter period from 1 October to 31 March, dogs are welcome on all parts of the beach off-lead. The promenade itself allows dogs on leads year-round. The St Leonards seafront has several dog-friendly cafes and the general atmosphere is well suited to dog walkers outside peak season. The shingle beach stays walkable at all tide states.

Frequently Asked Questions
St Leonards Beach is a decent option for dog walkers, earning a 6/10 on our dog-friendly rating. Dogs are welcome on the beach and the promenade runs alongside it for the full length of the seafront, making it a solid choice especially outside the summer season. The quieter, more local atmosphere compared to nearby Hastings makes it a pleasant place to walk with a dog.
Dogs are welcome at St Leonards Beach year round, but seasonal restrictions apply to some sections between 1 April and 30 September under a Hastings Borough Council PSPO. During the restricted season, dog-friendly beach access remains available east of Warrior Square, and the promenade allows dogs on leads at all times. From 1 October to 31 March, dogs can be walked off-lead across all parts of the beach.
The beach is entirely shingle and shelves fairly steeply in places, so it's worth keeping that in mind if your dog likes to paddle. During the summer months (1 April to 30 September), check which sections are restricted before you head down, as dog-friendly areas are limited to east of Warrior Square on the beach itself. Parking is available roadside along the A259 seafront or in paid car parks in the town centre, and there are several cafes along the promenade if you fancy a stop.
