Eastney Beach

Eastney Beach occupies the southeastern corner of Portsea Island, where Portsmouth's urban seafront gives way to a quieter, more open stretch of coast facing south across the Solent. The beach is long and predominantly shingle, with a rare shingle habitat that Portsmouth City Council has designated as a Local Wildlife Site, home to specialist coastal plants and invertebrates found in few other places in the city. The Victorian Eastney Beam Engine House stands a short distance back from the beach, and remnants of anti-tank obstacles from the Second World War are visible at the eastern end. The promenade here is quieter than the main Southsea frontage to the west, attracting dog walkers, naturists at the eastern end, and those looking for a less managed, more natural beach experience.

Eastney Beach sits mostly outside the main Southsea seasonal dog restriction zone. Between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are banned on the stretch west of the Eastney Coffee Cup, but the beach east of the Coffee Cup remains accessible year-round, and this covers most of what is considered Eastney Beach proper. Outside the restriction season, the full stretch from the Coffee Cup eastwards is freely accessible. Street parking is available on Eastney Esplanade and along the residential streets behind the beach, and there are public toilets opposite the Coffee Cup cafe.
