Colwell Bay

Colwell Bay is a sandy and shingle bay on the northwestern coast of the Isle of Wight, facing west across the western Solent with outstanding sunset views towards the Needles and the chalk stacks of the island's western tip. The beach is backed by low cliffs and accessible from Colwell Chine Road, with a modest promenade and a line of beach huts giving it a traditional, family-oriented character. The bay is more sheltered than the open southern coast and tends to be calm enough for paddling and swimming on most summer days. Colwell is quieter than the main resort beaches and has a loyal following among those who return for the relaxed pace and the reliably good light at the end of the day.

Dogs face seasonal restrictions at Colwell Bay between 1 May and 30 September under the Isle of Wight Council PSPO, reinstated in January 2025. Outside the summer season, dogs are welcome across the full beach with no restrictions, and the winter months in particular offer some excellent dog walking with the bay largely to yourself. The area connects to coastal footpaths south towards Totland Bay, making it easy to combine the beach with a longer walk. Parking is available near Colwell Chine Road, and there is a seasonal cafe and ice cream kiosk at the beach. Freshwater town with a fuller range of facilities is a short drive inland.
