Newton-by-the-Sea

Newton-by-the-Sea is a tiny, beautiful Northumberland village with a sheltered sandy beach at Newton Haven, one of the most charming small beaches on the entire Northumberland coast. The village consists of a cluster of fishermen's cottages around a village square, and the Ship Inn, which opens seasonally and is a beloved local institution with outdoor tables overlooking the beach. The beach is sheltered by Newton Point to the north, and the sweeping sands of Low Newton and Newton Links connect southward to the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The surrounding area is managed by the National Trust as part of the Newton-by-the-Sea property.

Dogs are welcome year-round at Newton-by-the-Sea beach with no seasonal restrictions. The beach is explicitly listed among Northumberland's year-round dog friendly beaches. A seasonal fence near the Long Nanny burn to the north of the beach may require dogs to be kept on leads during breeding season to protect tern colonies, but the main beach at Newton Haven is open off-lead. Parking is available at Low Newton visitor car park (NE66 3EH), a short walk from the beach. The Ship Inn is dog friendly outside.
