Ben Wyvis from Garbat
Highlands
Ben Wyvis (1,046m) dominates the skyline north-west of Inverness and is one of the most recognised mountains in the Eastern Highlands. The route from the Garbat forestry car park is the most commonly used approach, climbing through plantation woodland before gaining the open hillside and ascending to the broad, flat summit plateau via the An Cabar shoulder. The summit ridge extends for over a kilometre at plateau level, giving exceptional views across the Cromarty and Dornoch Firths, the Northern Highlands and on clear days the Cairngorms to the south.
Ben Wyvis is a genuinely excellent choice for dog owners seeking a Munro with good mountain character and high off-lead potential. The open summit plateau is extensive, the path is clear throughout and the absence of technical terrain makes this manageable for well-conditioned dogs. The plantation woodland at the base asks for leads but the open hillside above is entirely unrestricted. Several burns on the ascent provide drinking water. The 1,050 m of ascent is a serious undertaking and the mountain carries snow late into spring; plan for a full day and equip accordingly. The car park fills quickly on good weather weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ben Wyvis from Garbat is rated 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, making it one of the better Munros for a day out with your dog. The route follows a clear path throughout, the high ground is open and livestock-free, and there are burns on the ascent where dogs can drink. It's a serious mountain walk rather than a gentle stroll, so it suits well-conditioned dogs and owners who are comfortable on Highland terrain.
Above the plantation woodland at the base of the route, the open hillside and the expansive summit plateau offer excellent off-lead potential. The plateau itself stretches for over a kilometre at altitude, giving dogs plenty of room to roam freely across open, unrestricted ground. Dogs will need to be on lead through the forestry section near the Garbat car park at the start of the walk.
This is a full-day undertaking with around 1,050 metres of ascent, so it demands a good level of fitness from both you and your dog. Ben Wyvis holds snow well into spring, so check conditions carefully before heading out and equip accordingly. The Garbat car park can fill quickly on good weather weekends, so an early start is a sensible idea.
