Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A short, dramatic walk to one of Scotland's most impressive box canyons, where the Falls of Measach drop 46 metres into a gorge hung with ferns and mosses, viewed from a Victorian suspension bridge.

Corrieshalloch Gorge is one of the finest examples of a box canyon in Britain, a near-vertical slot cut 60 metres deep into the rock by glacial meltwater, now hung with moisture-loving ferns, mosses and liverworts on its dripping walls. The Falls of Measach at its head drop 46 metres in a single spectacular plunge, and the Victorian suspension bridge that crosses the gorge midway gives a memorable view directly down into the chasm. The whole walk from the car park to the falls viewpoint and back covers just 1.8 km, making this a short but genuinely dramatic outing.

Dogs are welcome at this dog friendly site, though the gorge path demands leads throughout given the unfenced drops on both sides. The suspension bridge is narrow and carries one person at a time; most dogs cross without difficulty but it moves underfoot, which can unsettle some animals. Off-lead potential is low throughout. The surrounding woodland is ancient hazel and birch, and the rich spray zone at the gorge base supports plant life rarely found elsewhere. This is best treated as a brief detour on the road to or from Ullapool rather than a full day's outing, but the drama it delivers in under an hour is hard to match anywhere in the region.
