Glencoe: Buachaille Etive Mor from Altnafeadh

Buachaille Etive Mor, the Great Herdsman of Etive, stands at the eastern gateway to Glencoe and presents one of the most recognisable mountain profiles in Scotland, its pointed summit of Stob Dearg (1,022m) rising from Rannoch Moor in near-perfect pyramid form. The ascent from Altnafeadh via Coire na Tulaich involves a steep scree gully before the summit ridge, and the route is exposed and demanding with significant navigation challenges on the broad upper mountain. This is a serious mountain walk requiring experience, fitness and appropriate equipment.

Buachaille Etive Mor is dog-accessible but this is a walk for highly fit, experienced hill dogs only. The scree gully ascent is loose and strenuous, the summit ridge narrow and exposed in places, and the total ascent of 800 metres places significant demands on all participants. Off-lead potential is low given the technical terrain on the upper mountain. The moorland approach from Altnafeadh across the base of the mountain is good off-lead country and offers the iconic views without the summit commitment. The Kings House Hotel a short distance away is one of the most storied mountain hotels in Scotland and welcomes dogs. The visual drama of this mountain and its position at the gateway to Glencoe makes the approach walk alone worth the journey.
