Kinlochleven to Mamore Lodge Hill Walk
Highlands
Kinlochleven sits in a tight valley at the head of Loch Leven, surrounded by the Mamore mountains on three sides, and the walk up to the Mamore Lodge and higher ground above the village reveals the dramatic topography of this Lochaber corner with increasing clarity as height is gained. The route climbs through birch woodland above the town, passes the old Mamore Lodge, and continues onto open hillside and moorland with the full panorama of the Aonach Eagach, Ben Nevis and the Glencoe mountains unfolding to the west. The loch below narrows to the sea at Ballachulish, giving the views a maritime framing.
This is an excellent dog friendly walk with high off-lead potential once clear of the woodland and village edges. The open Mamore hillside above the lodge is virtually livestock-free and gives dogs considerable freedom. The burns above the village provide clean water throughout the climb. Kinlochleven has a good range of dog-friendly facilities including pubs, a café and the Ice Factor climbing centre which also welcomes dogs outside. The town sits on the West Highland Way and the associated footpath infrastructure around it is well-maintained. A satisfying hill walk that delivers big views for moderate effort.
