Mallaig to Morar Silver Sands Walk

The Silver Sands of Morar stretch south from the village of Morar towards Mallaig in a succession of small bays and inlets framed by white shell-sand, clear turquoise water and the dramatic silhouette of the Knoydart mountains across the Sound of Sleat. The sand is some of the whitest in Scotland and the water colour in calm weather rivals anything on the west coast. The route from Morar explores the beach system south along the coast before returning via a hillside path above the shore, with the River Morar providing a remarkable freshwater addition near the village as the shortest river in Scotland runs from Loch Morar to the sea in under a kilometre.

This is a wonderful dog friendly walk with broad appeal. Off-lead running on the white sand is the highlight, and the clear shallow water provides superb swimming access. Livestock risk is low across the beach system. The River Morar mouth is worth spending time at, as the contrast between the dark-stained river water and the sea is visually striking and the sandbar at the river mouth is good for dogs. Mallaig, accessible either on foot or by the local train service from Morar station, provides dog-friendly cafés and the famous Mallaig fish and chip establishments for the owner. A walk that looks like it belongs somewhere considerably further south.
