Cavehill to Belfast Lough Viewpoint
County Antrim
This is the direct version of the Cavehill hike, a dog friendly there and back that pushes straight up from Belfast Castle to the iconic basalt prow of McArt's Fort. The payoff is a clean panorama across Belfast Lough, the city below and on to the Ards Peninsula in the east.
Dogs must be on a lead for the climb because the upper slopes are grazed by cattle and the drop from the fort is sheer, so careful control near the edge is essential. The route is 4 kilometres of mostly forest track and grassy hillside, with a short steep scramble in the last pitch to the viewpoint. Parking is free at Belfast Castle, with toilets, a cafe and bins, though dogs are not permitted inside the castle, gardens or playground.
