Chew Green Roman Camp Walk

This dog friendly walk climbs from the Buckham's Bridge car park at the head of the upper Coquet road onto the Border Ridge and follows the Pennine Way south to Chew Green, the most extensive Roman marching camp complex in Britain. The earthworks sit in a wide bowl of moor with the Scottish border running just above, and the loneliness of the place is the whole point.

Dogs are welcome but this is open hill-sheep country and active MOD training ground, dogs must stay on a short lead throughout and you must obey the red-flag warnings displayed at the Buckham's Bridge gate before setting off. Underfoot the Pennine Way is mostly flagstone causeway and grass with peat-hag detours either side, no facilities at all once you leave the car park and no reliable drinking water for the dog so carry plenty. The reward is a feeling of remoteness that almost no other walk in England matches.
