Plessey Woods River Blyth Walk

Northumberland

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 Dog friendly easy woodland and riverside circuit of Plessey Woods Country Park, 100 acres of meadow and oakwood beside the River Blyth.

This dog friendly walk follows the perimeter of Plessey Woods Country Park, looping out from the visitor centre through mixed oak and beech woodland down to the River Blyth and back across meadow. The park's 100 acres of woodland, grassland and riverbank punch above their weight for wildlife, kingfishers, dippers and otters all use the river and the bluebells in late spring are well worth the trip.

Dogs are very welcome and the park is one of the few places this close to the coast where you can give them a long off-lead run through proper deciduous woodland. Keep them under close control near the visitor centre, the playground and the few field edges where livestock occasionally graze, and pop the lead on for the steeper steps down to the river. Underfoot is hardpacked woodland trail and grass meadow with a couple of steep timber-step descents. Free parking, visitor centre with cafe, toilets and a play area, river access for a paddle.
