Win Hill from Hope Village
South Yorkshire
Win Hill is one of the most distinctive summits in the Hope Valley, a shapely little peak that rises cleanly above Ladybower. This dog friendly circular from Hope village makes a steady climb through fields and open hillside to the rocky summit cairn, where the view takes in Mam Tor, Lose Hill, Kinder Scout and the full length of the reservoir. The return descends through Twitchill Farm and the pretty hamlet of Aston back into Hope.
Most of the upper hillside is open access moorland where dogs can run off lead, but the lower fields are grazed by sheep and livestock so a lead is needed on the approach and descent. The initial climb is steep and the summit is exposed, so in strong wind or wet weather paws can find the rock slippery. Hope village has pubs, cafes and a bakery for afterwards, and the Cheshire Cheese and the Woodroffe Arms are both reliably dog friendly. Parking is available in the village pay and display car park opposite the church.

Frequently Asked Questions
Win Hill from Hope Village is a solid choice for dogs, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. The route takes you through open moorland and up to a spectacular rocky summit with views over Ladybower Reservoir, Mam Tor and Kinder Scout. After your walk, both the Cheshire Cheese and the Woodroffe Arms in Hope village are reliably dog friendly, so you can round things off with a well-earned drink.
On the upper hillside, which is open access moorland, dogs can enjoy a good run off lead. However, the lower fields on both the approach from Hope and the descent through Twitchill Farm are grazed by sheep and livestock, so you'll need to keep your dog on the lead through those sections. It's worth having a lead easy to hand throughout the walk as the transition between open moorland and farmland comes at a few points along the route.
The initial climb out of Hope is steep, and the rocky summit is exposed and can get slippery in wet or windy weather, so it's worth being prepared and keeping an eye on the forecast. As mentioned, a lead is essential through the grazed fields at the bottom of the route. Parking is available in the pay and display car park in Hope village opposite the church, which has around forty spaces, and the village also has pubs, cafes, a bakery and toilets to make the most of before or after your walk.
