Thames Path: Greenwich to Woolwich

London

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A flat Thames Path linear from Cutty Sark to Woolwich past the O2 and Thames Barrier, dog friendly on a strict short lead.

This stretch of the Thames Path National Trail leaves Maritime Greenwich beside the Cutty Sark, threads behind the O2 dome on Greenwich Peninsula, picks up the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park and the elegant white piers of the Thames Barrier, and finishes at the Woolwich foot tunnel and Royal Arsenal. It is dog friendly throughout but with very strict rules.

Dogs must be on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead at all times along the Woolwich section, with the same expectation realistically applied through the busier Greenwich and Peninsula stretches where pedestrians, runners and cyclists share the path. The terrain is paved riverside walkway, completely flat and easy underfoot. There is no on-site car park: most walkers arrive by Cutty Sark DLR or Greenwich rail and return from Woolwich Elizabeth Line or DLR.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, dogs are welcome along this entire stretch of the Thames Path, earning it a 7/10 dog-friendly rating. The route runs from the Cutty Sark all the way to Woolwich past the O2 and Thames Barrier, and is paved, completely flat, and easy going for dogs of all sizes and ages.

Unfortunately not — dogs must be kept on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead throughout the walk. This is a strict requirement in the Woolwich section and is realistically expected along the busier Greenwich and Peninsula stretches too, where the path is shared with pedestrians, runners, and cyclists.

This is a linear walk, so it's worth planning your transport in advance — the easiest approach is to arrive at Cutty Sark DLR or Greenwich rail and return from Woolwich Elizabeth Line or DLR, as there's no on-site car park and street parking in Greenwich is limited and costly. The good news is that cafes, pubs, and public toilets are dotted along the route at Greenwich, North Greenwich, Charlton Riverside, and Royal Woolwich Arsenal, so there are plenty of stops to rest and refuel along the way.
