Aberaeron South Beach

Aberaeron South Beach stretches south from the harbour of this handsome Georgian town on the Ceredigion coast, quickly leaving the colourful quayside behind for a rawer, quieter stretch of coastline. The mix of shingle and sand gives the beach an unpolished character — pebbles crunching underfoot on the upper shore, firmer sand lower down where the waves reach — and the harbour wall provides shelter from northerly winds while the open coast beyond catches the full force of Cardigan Bay weather. The town above is one of the prettiest on the Welsh coast, with painted terraces curving around the harbour.

Dogs are welcome year-round on this dog friendly beach, making it a dependable option regardless of season. The shingle and sand provide varied terrain for exploration, and the transition from sheltered harbour to open coast creates changing scent — salt spray, seaweed, harbour rope and fish on the town side giving way to cleaner ocean air further south. The beach offers good space for off-lead running on the lower sand at mid to low tide. Toilets and cafes are available in Aberaeron, and the harbour itself is worth exploring with dogs before or after the beach. Calmer conditions inside the harbour make this a good choice for dogs new to the sea.
