Combesgate Beach
Devon
Combesgate Beach is a small sandy cove north of Barricane and just off the main stretch of Woolacombe Beach, accessed via a steep path from The Esplanade in Woolacombe. The beach disappears at high tide, leaving only the path and the rocks below the cliff, but at low water a substantial area of sand is revealed with rock pools along both edges. It is less visited than either Woolacombe or Barricane despite being close to both, partly because the high-tide disappearance limits the visiting window and partly because the access requires some effort. The result is a cove that tends to attract those who know it rather than passing visitors, and the rock pooling here is reliable and rewarding.
Dogs are not permitted at Combesgate Beach from 30 April to 30 September, which covers the entire practical beach season given the tidal limitations. For dog owners visiting Woolacombe in summer, the nearby Barricane Beach allows dogs on leads when the cafe is operating, and Putsborough Sands to the south has year-round access on its northern section. Outside the restricted months, Combesgate is open to dogs and the low crowds and rock pool interest make it a good autumn option. Woolacombe village facilities are a short walk away in all directions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Combesgate Beach is dog friendly outside of the summer season, but carries a full ban from 30 April to 30 September, which covers the main visiting window. This gives it a rating of 5 out of 10 on our dog-friendly scale , perfectly welcoming in autumn and winter, but not an option for summer visits with your dog.
No , dogs are banned from Combesgate Beach between 30 April and 30 September each year. Outside those months, dogs are welcome, and the low crowds and rock pool interest make it a genuinely appealing autumn option. If you're visiting in summer, nearby Putsborough Sands has year-round dog access on its northern section, and Barricane Beach allows dogs on leads when the café is open.
The most important thing to plan around is the tide , the beach disappears almost entirely at high tide, so you'll want to time your visit around low water to get any meaningful space on the sand. Access is via a steep path from The Esplanade in Woolacombe, so bear that in mind if your dog finds steps or inclines tricky. There are no facilities at the beach itself, but Woolacombe village with its shops, cafes and pubs is only a short walk away.
