Covehithe Beach

Suffolk

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A wild, dog friendly beach on the eroding Suffolk coast with year-round access, dramatic cliffs and no facilities, perfect for those seeking an unspoiled escape.

Covehithe Beach is a wild, dog friendly stretch of the Suffolk coast set between crumbling golden cliffs and the sea, reached via a narrow lane that literally falls into the North Sea due to the fastest rate of coastal erosion in England. At around five metres lost per year, the vanishing coastline gives the beach an otherworldly character: bleached, sculpture-like tree trunks of long-fallen clifftop trees lie scattered across the sand, and the road itself terminates abruptly at the cliff edge. The beach is backed by Benacre National Nature Reserve to the north, where Benacre Broad, a brackish lagoon and reed-bed system, sits just behind the shoreline and is home to marsh harriers, bearded reedlings and wintering wildfowl. To the south, Covehithe Broad adds further wildlife interest. The medieval ruins of St Andrew's Church stand just back from the beach, a dramatic reminder of the wealth this now-tiny community once possessed.

Dogs are welcome year-round at Covehithe with no seasonal restrictions, making it one of the most reliably dog friendly beaches on the Suffolk coast. The combination of wide open sand and shingle, rock pools exposed at low tide, and the constant discovery of objects emerging from the eroding cliffs makes it a genuinely stimulating outing for dogs. The beach rarely feels crowded, even in summer, because there is no car park, no cafe, no ice cream van and no facilities of any kind: visitors must park considerately on the lane or grass verge in the village and walk down the footpath to reach the beach. This natural filtering keeps numbers low. High tide reduces the available beach significantly, so checking tide times before visiting is worthwhile.
