Criccieth Beach

Gwynedd

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10A sandy beach dominated by Criccieth Castle's medieval silhouette with seasonal restrictions from 1 April to 30 September, Cadwaladers legendary ice cream and the classic charm of a Welsh seaside resort.

Criccieth Beach is a sandy beach at the small, charming resort town of Criccieth on Cardigan Bay, dominated by the medieval castle on its headland. The castle, built by Llywelyn the Great, overlooks both the main promenade beach and the smaller marine beach to the east. The town has excellent ice cream (Cadwaladers is legendary) and a relaxed, classic Welsh seaside character.

A seasonal restriction applies at both the Criccieth promenade beach and the marine beach from 1 April to 30 September under Gwynedd Council PSPO, covering designated zones. Dog-accessible sections remain. Full access outside the restriction season.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Criccieth Beach dog friendly?

Criccieth Beach is reasonably welcoming to dogs, earning a 6 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. There are seasonal restrictions in place across designated zones on both the promenade beach and the marine beach to the east, but dog-accessible sections remain available even during the restricted period. The town itself has plenty to enjoy alongside your visit, including cafes, pubs, and the legendary Cadwaladers ice cream.

  • Are dogs allowed at Criccieth Beach year round?

Dogs have full access to both Criccieth beaches outside of the seasonal restriction period. From 1 April to 30 September, a Gwynedd Council PSPO applies to designated zones on both the promenade beach and the marine beach, limiting where dogs can go. Outside these zones and outside this season, you and your dog are free to enjoy the beach without restriction.

  • What should I know before visiting Criccieth Beach with my dog?

The key thing to be aware of is the seasonal restriction running from 1 April to 30 September, which applies to designated zones on both beaches under a Gwynedd Council PSPO — so it's worth checking the signage on arrival to make sure you're in a dog-permitted area. Outside the restriction season, the beach is fully accessible and well worth a visit, with the dramatic silhouette of Criccieth Castle overhead adding to the atmosphere. There are car parks near the beach, public toilets, and good facilities in the town, making it a comfortable day out.
