Cuckmere Haven

Cuckmere Haven is one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in Sussex, where the meandering River Cuckmere meets the sea between a sweeping shingle shore and the towering chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. The setting is cinematic — the undeveloped river valley, the white chalk rising to east and west, and the wide open beach create a scene that has featured in countless films and photographs. The walk down from the car park follows the river through its famous meanders before reaching the shingle shore, and the South Downs Way runs along the cliff top above, offering the option to combine beach and downland walking.

Dogs are welcome off-lead year-round on this dog friendly beach, though leads are required in the Cuckmere Valley section near wildlife areas where ground-nesting birds breed. The shingle shore provides varied texture and good scent from the tide line, and the river mouth creates an interesting transition zone where freshwater meets salt — the scent shifts from muddy riverbank to clean sea air within a few strides. The beach is accessible at most tide states, and the rock pools at the base of the chalk cliffs emerge at lower water. The terrain is stony underfoot so suits dogs comfortable on shingle rather than those who prefer soft sand. Parking is available at the Exceat car park.
