Dollar Cove

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A wide Atlantic cove named for shipwrecked silver dollars, with year-round dog access, good surf and a mysterious history.

Dollar Cove is the southern of the two sandy bays at Gunwalloe on the western Lizard Peninsula, named for the silver dollars that have washed ashore over the centuries from the wrecked Portuguese galleon San Antonio, lost here in 1527. The cove is broad and open, facing west into the Atlantic, with the dramatic cliffs of Halzephron above to the north and the low headland of Gunwalloe Fishing Cove to the south. Fine Atlantic sand, clear water and the extraordinary history of the wreck give the beach an almost mythic quality.

Dogs are welcome at Dollar Cove year-round with no PSPO restrictions and the beach has an excellent reputation among local dog walkers who appreciate its combination of space, sand quality and relatively low visitor numbers. The wide Atlantic-facing bay gives dogs room to run on firm sand, and the surf, when running, provides energetic swimming for confident dogs. The connection to Church Cove to the north is easy at low tide, effectively doubling the beach territory. The historical shipwreck heritage adds a curious frisson to what is already one of the more special beaches on the Lizard Peninsula.
