Eastney Beach

Hampshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A quieter, wilder alternative to the main Southsea seafront, with rare shingle habitat, WWII history, and year-round dog access east of the Eastney Coffee Cup.

Eastney Beach occupies the southeastern corner of Portsea Island, where Portsmouth's urban seafront gives way to a quieter, more open stretch of coast facing south across the Solent. The beach is long and predominantly shingle, with a rare shingle habitat that Portsmouth City Council has designated as a Local Wildlife Site, home to specialist coastal plants and invertebrates found in few other places in the city. The Victorian Eastney Beam Engine House stands a short distance back from the beach, and remnants of anti-tank obstacles from the Second World War are visible at the eastern end. The promenade here is quieter than the main Southsea frontage to the west, attracting dog walkers, naturists at the eastern end, and those looking for a less managed, more natural beach experience.

Eastney Beach sits mostly outside the main Southsea seasonal dog restriction zone. Between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are banned on the stretch west of the Eastney Coffee Cup, but the beach east of the Coffee Cup remains accessible year-round, and this covers most of what is considered Eastney Beach proper. Outside the restriction season, the full stretch from the Coffee Cup eastwards is freely accessible. Street parking is available on Eastney Esplanade and along the residential streets behind the beach, and there are public toilets opposite the Coffee Cup cafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Eastney Beach dog friendly?

Yes, Eastney Beach is a solid choice for a dog-friendly outing, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. It's a quieter, less managed stretch of coast than the main Southsea seafront, which makes it popular with dog walkers looking for a more relaxed beach experience. The long shingle beach gives dogs plenty of space to explore, and there's a café and public toilets on hand for owners too.

  • Are dogs allowed at Eastney Beach year round?

Dogs are welcome year-round on the stretch of beach east of the Eastney Coffee Cup, which covers most of what is considered Eastney Beach proper. Between 1 May and 30 September, there is a seasonal ban on the stretch west of the Coffee Cup, but this falls within the main Southsea restriction zone rather than Eastney Beach itself. Outside the restriction season, the full stretch from the Coffee Cup eastwards is freely accessible.

  • What should I know before visiting Eastney Beach with my dog?

The key thing to be aware of is the seasonal dog restriction: between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are banned on the beach west of the Eastney Coffee Cup, so stick to the eastern side during summer months. The beach is shingle rather than sand, so it's worth bearing that in mind for dogs with sensitive paws. There are no lifeguards on duty, but you'll find public toilets and the Coffee Cup café nearby, and street parking is available on Eastney Esplanade (PO4 9RE) and in the residential streets behind the beach.
