Filey Beach

Filey Beach is a huge, flat expanse of sand on the North Yorkshire coast, stretching from Filey Brigg — a dramatic rocky headland — south toward Flamborough. At low tide the beach feels almost endless, with firm sand extending in every direction and the long views giving a powerful sense of space. The town sits above with a traditional seaside character that has resisted the more aggressive development of its larger neighbours, and the Brigg itself provides excellent rock pool exploration at lower tides. The sand is consistently good quality and the beach holds its character well at most tide states.

Seasonal restrictions apply on parts of the beach during summer — dog-friendly zones are marked, so check Scarborough Council PSPO signage for exact boundaries. Outside peak season, this dog friendly beach opens up fully and is one of the best in Yorkshire for off-lead running. The broad, firm sand provides outstanding terrain for energetic dogs, and the Brigg end offers rock pools, seaweed and tidal debris for investigation. The water access is gentle with a gradual sandy entry suitable for paddling. The flat character means this beach suits dogs of all fitness levels. Dog-friendly facilities are available in town, and the calmer atmosphere compared to Scarborough or Whitby makes Filey a more relaxed option. Parking is available with easy beach access.
