Gillan Beach

Gillan Beach is a small, tranquil sandy cove tucked into Gillan Creek on the Helford River estuary, accessible via a footpath through the hamlet of Gillan. The creek environment gives the beach an unusually sheltered, almost lagoon-like character, with calm water that reflects the surrounding oak woodland on still days. The tidal creek dries at low water but reveals firm sandy and muddy flats that extend across the estuary floor. The whole area has a deeply peaceful, unhurried quality and sees very few visitors.

Dogs are welcome here year-round with no restrictions and the creekside environment makes this a uniquely pleasant dog friendly beach experience. The calm water is perfect for swimming dogs, and the wide mudflats at low tide offer enormous scope for paddling and exploring. The woodland paths connecting Gillan to the wider Helford area provide excellent walking context for extending the day. The Tregildry Hotel nearby is welcoming to dogs. The tidal nature of the creek means visiting at high tide gives a very different experience from low tide, and both have their own appeal. A genuinely special, quiet location that rewards those willing to seek it out.
