Greatstone Beach

Greatstone Beach is one of the widest beaches in Kent, stretching between Littlestone and Dungeness with a vast flat expanse of sand at low tide that feels almost limitless. The beach is backed by low dunes and the Romney Marsh landscape behind, giving it a unique flat, open character quite different from the chalk cliffs and coves of the Kent coast further north. The sand is firm with an excellent walking surface year-round, and the beach extends so far at low water that the sea can feel like a distant feature rather than a constant presence. The views along the coast take in the Dungeness headland and its lighthouses to the south.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, making Greatstone one of the most reliable and spacious options in Kent. The flat, firm sand provides outstanding running terrain — dogs can sprint without restriction across the wide expanse. The tide line carries shells, seaweed and driftwood that provide scent interest on every visit, and the dune system offers contrasting exploration. The very flat character means tides affect a large area, so awareness of incoming water is sensible, though the gradual slope means the tide moves gently rather than dangerously. The water access is straightforward with a gradual sandy entry. Parking is available at the beach. A beach defined by space and simplicity.
