Gurnard Beach
Isle of Wight
Gurnard Beach runs along the low-lying northern coast of the Isle of Wight between Cowes and Thorness Bay, facing northeast across the western Solent towards Southampton Water. The beach is pebble and shingle with areas of sand at low tide, backed by a modest esplanade in the village and opening out to a more natural shingle and grass foreshore to the west. The setting is quiet and residential, with the sailing activity around Cowes visible to the east and a pleasant, open view across the Solent that gets good afternoon and evening light. Gurnard is largely free of the tourist activity that characterises Cowes during Regatta week and has a local, unhurried character that suits it well as a dog-walking destination.
Dogs face seasonal restrictions on part of Gurnard beach between 1 May and 30 September under the Isle of Wight Council PSPO, reinstated in January 2025. Dog-friendly sections are available within a short walk, and the stretch of beach and foreshore west of the village towards Thorness Bay is generally less restricted. From October to April, dogs are welcome across the full beach. The combination of a manageable walk from Cowes, quiet village amenities, and easy foreshore access makes Gurnard a practical and pleasant option for dog owners staying on the northern island. Limited parking is available near the Princes Esplanade, and there is a cafe and pub in the village.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gurnard Beach is a reasonable option for dog owners, though it comes with some seasonal limitations that are worth knowing about before you visit — hence its 5/10 dog-friendly rating. The beach has a quiet, unhurried character that suits dog walking well, and the foreshore stretching west towards Thorness Bay offers more open, natural space away from the village esplanade.
Dogs are welcome across the full beach from October to April, but seasonal restrictions apply to part of the beach between 1 May and 30 September under the Isle of Wight Council PSPO, reinstated in January 2025. During summer months, dog-friendly sections are still accessible within a short walk, and the stretch of beach and foreshore west of the village towards Thorness Bay is generally less restricted.
Parking is limited near the Princes Esplanade (PO31 8JW), so it's worth arriving with a bit of flexibility, and if you're visiting between May and September, check which sections of beach are open to dogs before heading down to the water. The village has a cafe and pub if you need a break, and Gurnard is walkable from Cowes, which can be a handy alternative approach if parking is tight.
