Happisburgh Beach

Norfolk

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A quiet, sandy dog friendly beach below dramatic eroding cliffs, with year-round unrestricted access and the iconic red and white Happisburgh lighthouse as a backdrop.

Happisburgh Beach is a dog friendly, unspoiled sandy beach on the North Norfolk coast between Mundesley and Sea Palling, notable for being the site of the oldest known human footprints outside Africa, dating back over 800,000 years. The beach is accessed via a steep sandy slope north of the red and white striped lighthouse, which has stood here since 1790 and is the only independently operated lighthouse in the UK. The landscape at Happisburgh is dramatic and ever changing: coastal erosion here is severe, with the clay cliffs retreating at a rapid pace and the coastline looking markedly different year on year. The sandy beach extends for miles in both directions at low tide, connecting northward toward Cart Gap and south toward Mundesley.

Dogs are welcome year-round at Happisburgh with no seasonal restrictions, making it one of the most reliably dog friendly beaches on the Norfolk coast. The beach is genuinely quiet and rarely feels crowded, offering excellent off-lead space with wide open sand and easy walking in both directions at low tide. The access slope from the clifftop car park can be steep and the path is occasionally closed for safety due to cliff instability, in which case the concrete slip at Cart Gap to the north provides an alternative entry point. A car park and public toilets are located on the clifftop adjacent to the lighthouse.
