Hengistbury Head Beach

Dorset

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A wild sandy beach below the Hengistbury Head headland with year-round access along the less busy southern shore.

Hengistbury Head Beach stretches along the south side of this prominent Dorset headland, where the open coast meets the entrance to Christchurch Harbour. The beach shifts between sand and shingle depending on where you drop down from the headland path, and the views are exceptional — Christchurch Harbour to the north, the Isle of Wight to the east, and the Purbeck Hills across Poole Bay. The headland itself is a scheduled ancient monument and nature reserve, with heathland, scrub and grassland above the beach adding layers of walking beyond the shore. The whole setting feels properly wild despite being on the doorstep of Bournemouth.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, making Hengistbury Head one of the best escapes on the Bournemouth coastline. The broad sand provides good running space, and the transition between beach, headland and harbour edge creates constantly changing terrain and scent. Strong currents run through the narrow channel at the Mudeford end — known as the Run — so dogs should be kept out of the water in that section. The harbour-side beach at Mudeford Spit offers calmer, shallower water for paddling. The headland walking extends the outing significantly, with coastal scrub and heathland scent contrasting with the salt air below. Parking is available with a land train running to the end of the Head.
