Hive Beach (Burton Bradstock)

Dorset

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A stunning Jurassic Coast beach with reliable off season access and a dog friendly cafe right on the shoreline.

Hive Beach sits beneath the golden sandstone cliffs of Burton Bradstock on the Jurassic Coast, looking out across Lyme Bay with views stretching toward Portland Bill on clear days. The beach is a mix of shingle and coarse sand, with a broader sandy strip opening at the waterline at lower tides. The award-winning Hive Beach Cafe sits right beside the car park, the South West Coast Path passes directly above, and the National Trust manages the surrounding land. The golden cliffs glow in afternoon light, and the geology — layered Bridport sandstone — is visually striking.

Dogs are not permitted on the main beach directly in front of the cafe from 1 June to 30 September. Outside those months, this is a brilliant dog friendly beach where the shingle crunches underfoot and carries the salty, seaweedy tang of a working shoreline. At low tide, damp sand, shallow pools and washed-up kelp provide investigation opportunities. The section east toward Cogden Beach remains accessible with dogs on lead during the restricted period, so summer isn't a complete write-off. The beach narrows significantly at high tide, so timing visits around lower water gives more space. The Hive Beach Cafe welcomes dogs — a proper coastal cafe with excellent seafood that makes this a strong option for owners who want a good walk followed by good food.
