Holkham Beach

Holkham Beach is one of the great wilderness beaches of England, a vast expanse of sand backed by rolling dunes and a belt of Corsican pines within the Holkham National Nature Reserve. At low tide the sand stretches for what feels like miles, and the walk through the pine woodland from Lady Anne's Drive to the beach itself is one of the most atmospheric approaches to any British shore — the resinous scent of warm pine giving way to salt air as you emerge through the dunes. The beach has featured in films and photographs for decades, and the combination of scale, wildness and that extraordinary pine-and-salt transition makes it genuinely memorable.

Dogs are welcome year-round on this dog friendly beach, though seasonal on-lead zones apply during ground-nesting bird season from approximately April to July — follow signage on arrival. Outside those zones and restrictions, there is enormous space for off-lead running on the firm, flat sand. The scent here is distinctive: pine resin from the woodland mingles with salt air and the clean mineral smell of wet sand, creating a layered environment that dogs find deeply engaging. The beach opens dramatically at low tide but narrows considerably at high water, so checking tide times is important. The dune edges and pine woodland provide completely different walking terrain alongside the beach itself. A exceptional beach for energetic dogs and owners who want proper space.
