Holland-on-Sea Beach
Essex
Holland-on-Sea Beach is a quieter and less developed alternative to Clacton, stretching along the coast four miles to the north-east and offering a long, sandy shoreline that appeals to those looking to escape the bustle of the main resort. The beach is dog friendly for much of the year and is backed by two promenades with benches and beach huts, and the terrain is composed of coarse, grainy sand with rock breakwaters constructed in recent years to help retain the beach. The surrounding coast is good for spotting migrant birds, and the quieter atmosphere makes it a pleasant spot for long walks with or without a dog.
Dogs are allowed at Holland-on-Sea Beach outside the summer season, but a restriction applies from 1 May to 30 September on the main section running from the breakwater south-west of Queensway to the cafe north-west of Queensway. Outside of these months, dog owners have good access to the beach and the promenade. Several pay and display car parks are available, along with on-street parking along Marine Parade. There is a cafe on the promenade and basic facilities nearby, though Holland-on-Sea is quieter on amenities than Clacton.

Frequently Asked Questions
Holland-on-Sea Beach is a reasonably dog-friendly spot, earning a 6 out of 10 on our rating. Dogs are welcome outside the summer months, and the long sandy shoreline backed by two promenades makes it a pleasant place for a walk with your dog when restrictions aren't in place.
Dogs are not permitted on the main section of the beach between 1 May and 30 September — specifically the stretch running from the breakwater south-west of Queensway to the cafe north-west of Queensway. Outside of those months, you and your dog have good access to both the beach and the promenade.
It's worth checking the seasonal restriction dates before you go, as dogs are banned from the main beach section between 1 May and 30 September. Parking is available via several pay and display car parks, as well as on-street options along Marine Parade, and there's a cafe on the promenade if you need a break. The beach itself is made up of coarse, grainy sand with rock breakwaters, so it's a good idea to check your dog's paws after a visit.
