Kiloran Bay

Argyll and Bute

Dog Friendly Rating: 10/10 The finest beach on the Isle of Colonsay, a sweeping golden bay with Atlantic surf, backed by wildflower-rich machair and with year-round unrestricted dog access on this remote Inner Hebrides island.

Kiloran Bay is widely considered the finest beach on the Isle of Colonsay, a sweeping crescent of golden sand on the island's north-western coast, backed by machair grassland and dunes. Colonsay itself is one of the most tranquil and unspoiled of the Inner Hebrides: a small island with a permanent population of under 150, a distillery, and a coast of extraordinary beauty. Kiloran Bay faces the Atlantic and on clear days the views are enormous. The bay is popular with surfers and bodyboarders, and the machair behind it supports remarkable wildflower diversity in early summer.

No dog restrictions apply at Kiloran Bay under Scotland's Land Reform Act. Year-round dog access. The island is reached by ferry from Oban or Kennacraig. Very limited vehicle hire is available on the island. No facilities at the beach itself; the island hotel and pub are the main options for refreshments.
