Lulworth Cove
Dorset
Lulworth Cove is a near-perfect horseshoe-shaped bay formed over ten thousand years by the sea eroding through bands of Portland limestone and then rapidly removing the softer clays behind. The result is one of the most famous coastal landforms in England, a sheltered cove with remarkably calm water, shingle beach and clear views to the narrow entrance where the sea broke through. The Heritage Centre near the car park provides free entry and explains the geology. Stair Hole, a smaller and more dramatic example of the same process, sits just west of the cove and is worth the short detour. The village of West Lulworth offers pubs, cafes and a fishmonger selling locally caught seafood.
Dogs are welcome year-round on this dog friendly beach. The cove can be very busy during summer months, attracting over 500,000 visitors annually, so dogs comfortable around crowds and children will do best here. The far left end of the beach is generally the quietest area and best suited for letting dogs off lead. The shingle beach is easy to walk on, and the sheltered water means this is one of the safer swimming spots on the coast, though there are no lifeguards. A large pay and display car park sits five minutes' walk from the beach, with the Heritage Centre, toilets and gift shop adjacent.
